Benefits of Rainwater Harvesting

By using rainwater harvesting systems to supply water for some, or all of our water needs, you can reduce our dependence on municipally treated water. Overall, rainwater harvesting is viewed as a practice that is socially acceptable and environmentally responsible all the while, promoting self-sufficiency.

Benefits of rainwater harvesting
#1 Rainwater is sodium-free, important for persons on low-sodium diets.
#2 The water is free; the only cost is for collection and use.
#3 Rainwater is superior for landscape irrigation.
#4 The end use of harvested water is located close to the source, eliminating the need for complex and costly distribution systems.
#5 Rainwater provides a water source when groundwater is unacceptable or unavailable, or it can augment limited groundwater supplies.
#6 The zero hardness of rainwater helps prevent scale on appliances, extending their use; rainwater eliminates the need for a water softener and the salts added during the softening process.
#7 Rainwater harvesting reduces flow to storm-water drains and also reduces non-point source pollution.
#8 Rainwater harvesting helps utilities reduce the summer demand peak and delay expansion of existing water treatment plants.
#9 Rainwater harvesting reduces consumers’ utility bills.

Rainwater harvesting helps utilities reduce peak demands during summer months, saving treated water for more important and appropriate water uses. While rainwater can be a perfect primary water source for many uses and situations, it is also a great backup water supply for emergency situations.
