The transhumance shepherds are now starting their grazing season down in the lower valleys and the weather is warm and dry (above 20 degrees Celsius). In this valley there are lots of lynx, wolves and bears, so its important to have good livestock dogs. This shepherd had several Romanian Raven Shepherd Dogs (Romanian: Ciobănesc Românesc Corb) and he was kind enough to pose with a couple of them. 6/ #LGD #Transylvania #Romania / Photo by Paul White.

Paul White – I cannot over emphasise how unusual this scene is for April. These are transhumant shepherds grazing their flock in the high pastures. Normally they would still be in the lower valleys, but due to good rainfall and lots of sunshine the grass is growing well. 1/2 #Transylvania. / Photo by Paul White.
Paul White – It is common to see donkeys with transhumance groups, as they are good at detecting the presence of large predators and kick up an enormous fuss if they do so. They also carry daily provisions for the shepherds. There were several livestock guardian dogs present too. #farming 2 / Photo by Paul White.

Paul White – It looks like the shepherds are driving the sheep directly into the forest but there’s actually a corridor there and these are used to move flocks from one pasture to another. Sheep are kept on the move so not to overgraze in one concentrated area. 4 / Photo by Paul White.

March 8, 2024 – Blue Frog Film & Media @bluefrog_film – Water #buffaloes reached #Transylvania in the 17th century through the mediation of the Turkish Empire, as a luxury beast for their thick milk, and then widespread for their value as a draught animal and unpretending feeding habits. They generated countless stories and #puddles.
Paul White – Fascinating, as I didn’t know about this Turkish connection. I’ve always found these animals interesting and have seen several small herds in Transylvania over the years, but believe their numbers here were huge at one time. #waterbuffalo #farming @StuartMMeikle .
