How to Grow a Lemon Bonsai from Seed: Step-by-Step Guide

Growing a lemon bonsai from seed involves extracting seeds from a lemon, removing their outer coating, and germinating them in a damp paper towel within a sealed bag for 1–2 weeks. Once sprouted, plant them in well-draining soil, keeping them moist and in a warm, sunny spot to begin growth.

There are many Bonsail Group in Facebook, one of them “Bonsai Beginners” – you can join them and ask them to clear your doubts >> https://www.facebook.com/groups/1314492238695665/posts/3278679985610204/

  1. Seed Collection: Extract seeds from a fresh lemon and rinse off all pulp.
  2.  Seed Germination: Place seeds in a damp paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and keep at room temperature for 1–2 weeks until roots appears.
  3. Sapling Planting: Pot the sprouted seeds in a small container with a drainage hole, using a well-draining potting mix. Plant about 1/2 inch deep.
  4. Plant Care: Place in a sunny spot (6-8 hours direct sunlight) and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  5. Bonsai Development: After 1-3 years, begin training. This involves a “trunk chop” to manage height, wiring branches for shape, and pruning to encourage small leaves.
  6. Plant Maintenance: Move indoors if temperatures drop below 50F (10C). Fertilize monthly during growing seasons with a liquid fertilizer.
  7. Bonasi Plant: Growing from seed to a mature, styled bonsai takes 5-10 years.
  8. Root care: As the tree grows, maintain a small, shallow pot to restrict root growth, which helps keep the tree miniature.
